Hudtype eller hudtilstand – vet du forskjellen?

Skin Type or Skin Condition – What's the Difference?

Many people use the terms skin type and skin condition interchangeably, but they do not mean the same thing. Understanding the difference makes it easier to choose the right products and treatments for your individual skin needs.

Skin Type

Your skin type is largely something you are born with. It usually changes very little throughout your life, although factors such as age and hormones can influence it.

The most common skin types are:

  • Normal
  • Dry (lipid-deficient)
  • Oily
  • Combination

Skin Condition

A skin condition, on the other hand, can change over time and may be influenced by both internal and external factors, such as:

  • Season and climate
  • Stress
  • Hormones
  • Diet
  • Skincare routine
  • Illness
  • Medication

Common skin conditions include:

  • Dehydrated skin (moisture-deficient)
  • Sensitive skin
  • Redness
  • Blemish-prone skin
  • Pigmentation
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Weakened skin barrier

Did you know?

Dry skin lacks oil (lipids), while dehydrated skin lacks moisture (water). This means that all skin types – including oily skin – can become dehydrated.

Why is the difference important?

For example, someone may have:

  • Dry skin type + dehydrated skin
  • Oily skin type + sensitive skin
  • Combination skin type + redness

This is why one moisturiser does not suit everyone. To achieve the best results, it is important to choose products that are suited to both your skin type and its current condition.

How do you know what you have?

Not sure what your skin type or current skin condition is? I recommend having a professional skin analysis with a skincare therapist. Many offer consultations as part of a treatment, allowing you to receive advice tailored specifically to your skin.

Understanding the difference between skin type and skin condition is the first step towards creating a skincare routine that truly works for you. Once you understand what your skin needs, choosing the right products and treatments becomes much easier.
